Just a short post on this and that…

I have an upcoming trip to Japan, and I find it so strange that none of the popular bookstores I’ve been to around my city sells Japan guide books.

I can’t find any Japan tour books by Lonely Planet, Fodor’s, Frommer’s or any of the popular (or not-so-popular) travel guide companies.

They do sell travel guides to other countries with names that start with the letter “J” like Jamaica, and Jordan, but strangely, no Japan.  And I’ve only seen one travel book on Tokyo.  Just one!

Makes me think whether or not the Japanese government issued an order to travel guide companies not to publish books on their country.  Highly unlikely, but it’s just so strange that I can’t find one anywhere!

Looks like I have to make my own guide book by taking notes from different online sites…

It would be a great help if anyone out there can recommend good non-fiction reads about Japan / Japanese culture.

Thanks in advance!

On a recent trip to the book store (before my quest for the elusive travel guides to Japan), I bought these books:

I’m really looking forward to reading them…right after I finish 1Q84.  To conserve luggage space, I’m leaving 1Q84 at home when I travel to Japan and bring one of the three books instead.

Which one, I wonder…?

I wonder if Haruki Murakami has any upcoming books signing gigs in Japan when I’m there….?

  1. I’m sure I’ve seen guide books for Japan. I did a quick search, and it seems that Fodor’s and Lonely Planet do publish guide books for Japan and for particular Japanese cities, like Tokyo and Kyoto. How very strange that none of the bookstores near you sell them! Could you order one online?

I wish I could recommend you some non-fiction about Japan, but I sadly haven’t read any yet! I’m glad you’re reading Murakami, though 🙂

I hope you’re able to find a good guide book and that you have a great trip! My inner travel bug is insanely jealous 🙂

    • Thanks! Yes, I’m sure guide books to Japan do exist…it’s just strange that I can’t find any. Is Japan such a popular tourist destination and that’s why the books are sold out?

I guess I can order online, but it would take time here, so I’d really just want to buy on in a bookstore. Oh well…I’m sure I’ll find one eventually. Hopefully before my trip.

1Q84 is very interesting and very strange…..I think I’m enjoying it. LOL.
