It took me over 15 years to finally decide to read Victor Hugo’s epic novel, Les Miserables. I first discovered Les Miserables from the music and lyrics of Claude-Michel Shonberg, Alain Boublil and Herbert Kretzmer’s highly acclaimed musical of the same name. Through the powerful and moving music and oftentimes heart-wrenching songs, I was acquainted with the valiant, yet tormented Jean Valjean, the upright and obsessive, Javert, idealisitc, Marius, lovely Cosette and of course, the tragic Eponine. Les Miserables is an epic tale of love, survival, tragedy, and humanity, set in France in the 1800’s during its turbulent transitions between ruling powers.
Though I’ve always been curious about the novel, it’s length and reputation had always intimidated me. Now, finally, after years of listening to the music and knowing every song by heart, I’m finally confident enough to read deal with Hugo’s masterpiece.
And so begins my journey into one of the greatest novels of all time…
That’s awesome! Les Miserables is such a phenomenal story! I’m confident, even though it’s a long read, that you’re really going to enjoy it!
Thanks! I’m actually enjoying it a lot. I’ll try to post a summary per volume and right now I’m on the second volume, “Cosette.”
